Books have always added magic to my life. They bring me joy and tears–each one exactly when I need it. They teach me lessons and give me perspective. They take me on adventures around the world without me even having to leave my bed.

Books are dear friends and trusted advisors who have loved me back as much as I love them. Sharing my favorite stories with others is one of my favorite pastimes. I hope these books bring you exactly what you need, just as they have for me.

Below are a few of my favorites…

1) Once I Was You by Maria Hinojosa

Told from the perspective of a journalist, this book tells the beautiful and heartbreaking tale of an immigrant living in the United States. This author honestly speaks truths about our country and reminds us that our experiences vary greatly depending upon who we are and where we come from.

2) Somebody's Daughter by Ashley C Ford

Another heartbreaking, honest story of growing up in a less than perfect home, this memoir tells the touching tale of overcoming trauma. It is both beautifully written and incredibly inspiring.

3) The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore

This amazing historical novel details the story of a woman involuntarily committed to an insane asylum by a husband who could not control her. She not only overcame this unjust act, but went on to serve as an instrumental figure in passing new laws to protect women of future generations. She is both a badass and an inspiration.

4) The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander

I cannot recommend this book enough and believe it is a must read for everyone. If you are concerned about systemic racism and mass incarceration in this country, this book will open your eyes and inspire you to keep fighting for justice and equality for all.

5)On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
by Ocean Vuong

This beautifully written memoir reads like poetry. It tells the heartbreaking tale of a Vietnamese-American son, and is without a doubt one of my favorite books of all time.

6) The Overstory by Richard Powers

This fictional tale of human life intertwined with trees reminds us why we are here and ignites a passion within to protect and honor Mother Nature. As a lover of nature myself, this book spoke to my soul.

7) Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

My love for the book transcends words. This history lesson on indigenous people's experience in this country beautifully depicts their love for and honor of Mother Nature while giving scientific lessons on how we must act to protect this planet.

8) The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates

This amazing fictional novel tells the story of a baby boy who was born into slave labor and eventually began working for the underground railroad. Ta-Nehisi Coates is an exceptional writer who weaves a mesmerizing story in this book.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” -Roald Dahl
